IncamakeL'essentielThe bottom line
Turasuzuma ibiharuro, atari umuntu. Mais deux chiffres méritent d'être corrigés : We examine the figures, not the person. The recovery after 2020 is real, and "this can't be called a failure" is defensible. But two figures need correcting:
- Ni ukuri: mu 2020 (COVID) ukwiyongera kwari hafi ya zeru — Uburundi bwarakinze ukugabanuka gukomeye abandi benshi bagize. Ukugaruka inyuma yaho (~4% ku mwaka) ni ukuri. Ivyo turavyemera. La reprise depuis (~4%/an) est réelle. Nous l'admettons. True: in 2020 (COVID) growth was near-zero — Burundi avoided the sharp contraction seen elsewhere. The recovery since (~4%/yr) is real. We grant it.
- Ariko « ~6% » si ivyo ibigo mpuzamakungu biteganya. FMI iteganya ~3,8% (2026), Banki y'isi 4,0%, BAD ~4,3%. Nta na kimwe kigera kuri 6%. Iyo 6% ishobora kuba intumbero ya Leta, atari iteganya ry'ibigo mpuzamakungu nk'uko vyavuzwe. But "~6%" is not what the international financial institutions project. The IMF projects ~3.8% (2026), the World Bank 4.0%, the AfDB ~4.3%. None reaches 6%. That 6% looks like a government target, not an IFI projection as the post claims.
- « Ubunini bw'ubukungu mu madolari » ni igipimo giteye amakenga. PIB mu madolari irahindagurika cane bivanye n'igiciro c'amadovize (icemewe canke ic'ku masoko, itandukaniro ~2,5×) n'ukuduga kw'ibiciro (~40%). Inkomoro zitandukanye zitanga ibiharuro bitumva (kuva ~2 gushika ~7 miliyaridi $). The "size of the economy in dollars" is a misleading measure. Dollar GDP varies hugely with the exchange rate used (official or parallel, ~2.5× gap) and inflation (~40%). Sources give very different figures (from ~$2bn to ~$7bn). A rise in dollar GDP is not proof of "real progression" — that is measured by real growth (~4%).

IbigaragaraLes repères chiffrésThe key figures
1 · Ukugaruka ni ukuriLa reprise est réelleThe recovery is real
In 2020 Burundian growth was near-zero: the country actually avoided the recession most economies suffered with COVID. Since then, real growth has been positive, around 4% a year (agriculture, mining, electricity, public investment). On that basis, saying the trajectory "can't be called a failure" is defensible, and we don't dispute it. Mu 2020, ukwiyongera kw'Uburundi kwari hafi ya zeru: mu vy'ukuri igihugu carakinze ukugabanuka abandi benshi bagize kubera COVID. Kuva aho, ukwiyongera nyako ni kwiza, hafi 4% ku mwaka. Kuri ico shingiro, kuvuga ko « bidashobora kwitwa ukunanirwa » birumvikana, kandi ntitubihakana.
The post attributes "near 6%" to "the international financial institutions." But their recent projections are markedly lower: IMF ~3.8% (2026), World Bank 4.0% (2025), African Development Bank ~4.3% (2026). The gap isn't trivial: 4% and 6% are not the same story. A rate of around 6% is instead among the government's own targets (National Development Plan, emergence vision) — targets, not projections by independent institutions. And at ~4%, Burundi is not "among the most dynamic in the region": several neighbours (Rwanda, Tanzania) grow faster. Message yitirira « hafi 6% » « ibigo mpuzamakungu vy'imari ». Ariko iteganya ryabo rya vuba riri hasi cane: FMI ~3,8% (2026), Banki y'isi 4,0% (2025), BAD ~4,3% (2026). Itandukaniro ntirisanzwe: 4% na 6% si inkuru imwe. Igiharuro nka 6% kiri ahanini mu ntumbero za Leta (Plan y'iterambere), atari iteganya ry'ibigo vyigenga. Vyongeye, kuri ~4%, Uburundi ntiburi « mu bikomeye cane vyo mu karere »: ababanyi (Rwanda, Tanzania) barakura vyihuta.
Saying GDP went from "$2.6bn to $3.5bn" sounds concrete, but it's the most fragile indicator here. Dollar GDP depends on the exchange rate used, and in Burundi the gap between official and parallel rates is about 2.5×. Depending on method, sources put recent years anywhere from about $2bn to nearly $7bn — proof the number isn't stable. Moreover, a rise in current dollars mixes real growth, inflation (~40%) and exchange-rate effects. "Real progression" is measured by real volume growth (~4%), not by nominal size in foreign currency. Kuvuga ko PIB yavuye kuri « 2,6 gushika 3,5 miliyaridi $ » birasa n'ivyo gufatika, ariko ni co gipimo kidakomeye kuruta. PIB mu madolari iterwa n'igiciro c'amadovize, kandi mu Burundi itandukaniro ry'igiciro cemewe n'ic'ku masoko ni nka 2,5×. Bivanye n'uburyo, inkomoro zitanga imyaka iheze kuva ~2 gushika ~7 miliyaridi $ — icemezo c'uko iryo giharuro ridahagaze. Vyongeye, ukwiyongera mu madolari kuvanga ukwiyongera nyako, ukuduga kw'ibiciro (~40%) n'amadovize. « Iterambere nyakuri » ripimwa n'ukwiyongera nyako (~4%), atari ubunini mu mahera y'amahanga.
"Not a failure" and "a healthy economy" are two different claims. Real growth (~4%) coexists with inflation of about 40% in 2025, an exchange-rate gap of about 2.5×, fuel shortages for nearly five years and public debt around 70% of GDP at high risk of distress (see note 008 and note 012). The recovery is real; so is the macro-economic fragility. Both should be stated together. Vyompi bikwiye kuvugwa hamwe.
